When is it acceptable to recline your seat on an airplane?

Now that the number of coronavirus cases across the country and world has decreased, the travelling industry is witnessing a shift. With the international and domestic air travel guidelines in India for covid easing, travellers are back to exploring different corners of the world. Flights are fully booked, and people are back to debating about travelling and flying etiquette.

One such flying etiquette discussed from the start is whether reclining your flight seat is acceptable. While some people argue that it is okay to recline the seat they paid for, others debate that since it causes inconvenience to other flyers, it is against the etiquette. So what should a traveller do? Let’s explore!

  1. Consider the flight type:

Before reclining your seat, one of the things you must consider is time. If you are on a daytime flight, you should hold back from pushing back your chair. The reasoning is that many passengers are trying to get some work done during the day and have their tray tables down. Their laptops are open, and coffee is flowing, making reclining seats a potential disaster.

However, at night time, everyone tries to catch on some sleep time, so it’s hard to argue against reclining your chair. A good rule of thumb is to look back before doing so and warn the passenger before putting your seat back.

2. Think about when you are doing so:

It is best to recline your seat early in the journey, so the passenger behind you would know what to expect for the flight. However, if possible, you should hold back until after meal time. Doing so ensures that the other person gets the chance to eat their meal in comfort. Once the meal time has passed, you could recline; just give the other person a head’s up. Just turn back and tell them, “Hey, I am going to reline my seat for a while. It won’t be so for the whole journey.”

3. Do not get into a conflict:

Whether you are the person reclining the seat or the one being reclined on, it is best not to get into a fight when you are cramped in a space 30,000 feet above. If someone shouts at you and asks you not to push back your seat, you can tell them politely that you won’t be reclining for the whole time, but you have every right to. And when someone in front of you reclines, remember the same thing.

When travelling long-distance, it becomes necessary to recline your seat, especially if you have back pain. Follow these reclining tips when pushing your seat back to avoid conflicts.
